HOW TO APPLY

 

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. The stipend for these internships will be $1,000 per month for full-time interns; part-time interns will have their stipend prorated. All CIP internships are 100% remote. International students are encouraged to apply. 

As an intern with CIP, you will be an integral part of the program and have the opportunity to participate in many types of project activities, ranging from supporting website databases to contributing to research and/or content for our blog, fact sheets, policy briefs, reports, and social media. In doing so, you will gain a better understanding of international security and U.S. foreign policy interests worldwide.

Security Assistance Monitor (SAM) Internship

 

You will be a member of the Security Assistance Monitor (SAM) team, helping the program to research, track, and analyze trends in U.S. security assistance, arms sales, and foreign military training around the world, including their impact on human rights in the countries where they are delivered. 

 

Duties

 

  • Monitor news on security assistance and arms sales and draft tweets for SAM’s Twitter account

  • Contribute to the SAM weekly monitor, the program’s newsletter on developments in security assistance, arms sales, and foreign military training

  • Learn about and contribute to SAM’s databases, using U.S. government budget documents, and become more familiar with U.S. government budgeting processes

  • Create charts and infographics to support SAM research

  • Assist with SAM’s advocacy efforts

  • Conduct independent research to support SAM product

 

Qualifications

  • Be near-completion of undergraduate education, pursuing an advanced degree, or a recent graduate 

  • A strong interest in arms sales, security assistance, and human rights, as well as the intersections with other topics, such as corruption and environmental issues. Previous experience with these issue areas is especially valuable.

  • A creative mind with a strong interest in challenging status-quo thinking on U.S. foreign policy and reducing the flow of weapons around the world

  • A passion for open-source research and be comfortable reading and synthesizing large amounts of source material to identify important details.

  • Be a detail-oriented person with excellent writing and research skills.

  • Growth-oriented, highly motivated, and enjoy collaborative projects

Climate, Arms, Migration Policy (CAMP) Internship

 

CIP’s CAMP program evaluates the intersecting impacts of US energy and climate policies, climate change, and US defense policy on ecosystems and civilian populations worldwide. A key program focus is interrogating the implications of US policy responses to climate-related security challenges, including the environmental impact of security assistance and its contribution to irregular migration.

 

Qualifications

  • Be near-completion of undergraduate education, pursuing an advanced degree, or a recent graduate 

  • A strong interest in the intersection between climate change, US foreign policy, irregular migration, and peace and security issues. Previous experience with any of these issue areas is especially valuable.

  • A creative mind with a strong interest in challenging status-quo thinking on US foreign policy.

  • A passion for open-source research and be comfortable reading and synthesizing large amounts of source material to identify important details.

  • Be a detail-oriented person with excellent writing and research skills.

  • Growth-oriented, highly motivated, and enjoy collaborative projects

 

Duties 

 

  • Perform extensive research on overlapping policy topics relating to climate change, national security, environmental degradation, and migration, drawing on your own thematic or geographic expertise, to contribute to reports, factsheets, opinion pieces, issue briefs, and webinars.

  • Track general interest and specialist policy publications for relevant material. 

  • Attend and take notes at relevant events and congressional hearings.

  • Assist staff members with ad hoc assignments as needed​.

Communications Internship

As a communications intern with CIP, you will be an integral part of the program and have the opportunity to participate in many types of project activities.

Duties

 

  • Create content for CIP social media platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook

  • Help monitor and manage CIP social media accounts  

  • Attend and take notes at relevant events and congressional hearings

  • Assist staff members with ad hoc assignments and administrative duties as needed

  • Track social media and website hits and analytics

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive media list

  • Work with the staff to help create posts for Twitter and Facebook, media advisories, and email blasts

  • Create infographics and charts to highlight our research and analysis

  • Research new ideas for social media content to keep CIP media presence updated

Qualifications
  • Intern positions require a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • The applicant must be an enthusiastic team player and must have a demonstrable interest in international affairs and human rights. Applicants should be able to capture current events and information into engaging content for our email lists and social media 

  • The applicant must be capable of working on multiple tasks simultaneously and of understanding what the priorities are at every moment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of/interest in US foreign policy and regional issues

  • Highly developed research and writing skills

  • Ability to conduct in-depth internet research

  • Ability to adapt to new technologies/computer programs

  • Knowledge of social media platforms and Excel

  • Regional language skills desired

  • Familiarity with running social media accounts and knowledge in creating infographics and images to convey data are valued

  • Prior experience with Adobe Cloud, TikTok editing, and social media management is a big plus

Development Internship

As a development intern with CIP, you will be an integral part of CIP’s donor relations. Development interns will have the opportunity to contribute to CIP’s research projects, fundraising efforts, event planning, and more.

Duties

  • Assist staff members with ad hoc assignments and administrative duties as needed

  • Assist team with email marketing

  • Help build connections with current and potential donors

  • Assist with the planning and coordination of fundraising events

  • Research potential funder opportunities, including strategic partners, markets and industries

  • Help update the website with relevant information

  • Work on a fundraising strategy 

  • Manage and cultivate relationships with current and prospective donors

  • Research and share best practices for fundraising events and campaigns

  • Help maintain and update donor database

  • Draft fundraising emails/requests

  • Draft profiles of prospective donors

  • Work with the communication intern on reviewing materials and marketing around CIP

  • Send thank yous, receipts, and other donor notes

 

Qualifications
  • Intern positions require a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • The applicant must be an enthusiastic team player and must have a demonstrable interest in international affairs and human rights

  • Highly developed communication skills and ability to talk to people coming from widely different backgrounds 

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to conduct in-depth internet research

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Database experience preferred 

  • Ability to adapt to new technologies/computer programs

  • Foreign language skills desired

  • Experience with Bloomerang, Mailchimp, or Salesforce is a plus

  • Students majoring in public relations, public administration, and non-profit administration are encouraged to apply

Legislative Tracker Intern 

To help enhance accountability in the arms trade, CIP’s Legislative Tracker program identifies and tracks legislation introduced in the 118th Congress that pertains to U.S. security assistance, defense cooperation, and arms sales, and other foreign policy issue areas. 

Key Duties 

  • ​Work with the Legislative Tracker Program Lead to track legislation pertaining to relevant issue areas on internal databases

  • Track Congressional hearings on key issues

  • Draft policy memos on select topics and help staff prepare for meetings with policymakers 

  • Participate in drafting analytical articles and fact sheets on Congressional action on key topics

Qualifications
  • Intern positions require a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • The applicant must be an enthusiastic team player and must have a demonstrable interest in international affairs and human rights
