Congress—which represents the interests of the American public —has a responsibility to exercise oversight of arms sales and to ensure accountability. But both Americans and Congress have to start with the facts, and that means having access to detailed data for every type of security assistance program.

Our Zombie Defense Budget Now Tops $750 Billion

William Hartung interviewed

We begin with House passage of a record high $733 billion defense bill which both the congress and the press are discussing in terms of how amendments by the Democrats are restricting Trump from waging war on Iran while the Republicans decry the politicization of the National Defense Authorization Act, but there is no mention of how much money is being spent and whether we have any real enemies except for China and Russia, neither of whom want a hot war

In the aftermath of Khashoggi's murder, Saudi influence machine whirs on in Washington

Ben Freeman quoted

After the killing in October of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, a handful of lobbying firms and think tanks made a move rare in Washington: They publicly severed ties with Saudi Arabia, swearing off the kingdom’s money.

Congress needs more authority in international arms sales

By Elias Yousif

Like no other time in recent memory, Congress is losing the war for its rightful place in American governance. President Trump’s distaste for the norms that have traditionally limited the authority of his office have battered the separation of powers, a founding principle of American political life and an essential bulwark against presidential overreach. And when it comes to the weighty decision to transfer American weapons beyond our shores, our president has shown that the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches has come to list dangerously to one side.
